Biography

The Land-tourist Center Montezumo is located in the locality of the Legua, district, South Mercedes, Corner, Puriscal, Province of, San Jose, and it is located in the cartographic leaf Candlemas, Scale 1:50.000, Coordinates, North 9º50', - 84º20' the west. To only 60 minutes of San Jose, by via road, until the locality of the Legua and 1 km by rural route until the property to which inclusively it is possible to arrive by vehicle of simple traction.

The average of precipitation of the zone is of 2,050 mm/year, with a dry station pronounced between December and April; the annual average temperature is of 21ºC and oscillates between 19.6ºC and 22.9ºC, where as the relative humidity average is of 82%.
The property presents/displays a heterogenous topography, with slopes that vary between 10% and 80%, an average of 950 altitude of m.s.n.m. The grounds are classified like Ustic Tropohumults, mainly argillaceous and moderately deep, with good drainage, which improved with the use of organic installments.
The property has a rising intern with pick up and storage supplies that it potable water for the needs of the same, besides being surrounded by a river that serves to provide the water with irrigation at the dry time as well as to feed the cattle lagoons and another activities.
The extension of the property is up to 12 hectares and their main activities are, of coffee of species smaller handling and, the raising and fruit trees, vegetable, cattle ranch, toasting and the production pig chicken of fattening of lagoons for the young of tilapia.
At present almost half of its land is of wooded area and natural regeneration, which can be acceded by means of footpaths properly labeled indicating some of the species of trees and plants with its scientific name, these footpaths will lead to us until the bottom of the property where we will be of deep pool of refreshing water with cascades and until a stone cavern constructed by the constant water step through the years which nowadays is inhabited by great amount of bats.

Our Restaurant turned into a necessity due the great amount of people who visit to us. In which the specialty of the house is chicharrones of creed and tilapia. Furthermore we counted on rural cabins equipped the necessary thing for an pleasant stay yet

The Montezumo Property was born with an objective from protection from the nature and search from alternative means from production directed to the protection from the environment. This we planned the collaboration of the Italian Government, who by means of their counsellor the Doctor in Forest Sciences Nicola Curzel, managed to nourish of optimism and motivation to Don Jose Luis owner of the Property, by means of advanced training courses for the conservation of the agroforestry ecosystems in 1996, course which tried to teach to the farmers of the zone to work the more integral Earth and simultaneously healthier.With great enthusiasm and sights towards the future it decided to face the agro-chemical change to reduce the application of and aiming but at organic agriculture, not more investments for the motocultivos and more to the product diversity, in regard to previous the property was chosen like beneficiary for a project originated by the agreement between American Latin Italo (IILA) Institute and the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINAE) of Costa Rica, with the contribution of the Direction.

General for the Cooperation to the Development of the Ministry of Outer Subjects of Italy, this project tries to create demonstrative conservation enterprise integral property, with the aim of improving the conditions of life of his proprietors and for having concrete, indispensable examples simultaneously at the time of explaining to other farmers concepts like, integral system, organic product and conservation of resources.

After two years of work of the family Zúñiga Mora she was possible that in the property be counted on numerous examples of agroforestry techniques, farming, of ground conservation at the disposal of all tourist.

At present and having passed more than one decade from the initiate the project the same stays and continues growing. Focusing this time towards the tourist sector and voluntary military service in order to present our experience.

In the last years, basing to us on studies to classify the capacity of use of the ground in the different sectors, a work of relocation of the cultures was carried out; in the first place the culture area was reduced to allow the regeneration of the forest, with the aim of protecting the biodiversity and living in harmony with the nature. By this I limit the area of coffee of 5 2 hectares, was reduced the zone of I only graze to 2 hectares when before the cows were free to graze in a space of 3 hectares, but the evident signs of erosion in the steepest slopes could not be ignored, trying to be useful plus the advantages of the system. This way the property saw grow the area of forest in more than 6 hectares.

In the property a pork butcher's shop with capacity for 8 pigs also exists, whose nutritional diet consists of a part of concentrate and complementary feeding like reed of sugar, leftover milk serum, banana trees, guavas and other by-products in the property. The dung is a very valuable product, since by means of the originated anaerobic fermentation in a called structure biodigestor the biogas production is obtained which is used to cook. The effluent in amount of 40 liters daily is free of pathogenic agents and is used to fertilize I graze and fodder bank, since the fermentation process gaseous nitrogen is transformed into ammonia that is a soluble form in water and at the disposal of the plants. In short, we cannot forget us the enormous ecological costs that are avoided when generally not contaminating the water sources and the atmosphere with the leftover crude dung of the pork butcher's shop so the utility of this type of technology is from great importance
